Former child star who played Michelle Williams’ daughter passes away

Tragic Loss of Former Child Star Sophie Nyweide, Beloved for Her Role in Mammoth, at Age 24

Sophie Nyweide, the talented former child actress best remembered as Michelle Williams’ on-screen daughter in the 2009 film Mammoth, has passed away at just 24 years old. The heartbreaking news was confirmed by her family in a touching online obituary, revealing that Sophie died on April 14.

Before turning ten, Sophie had already made a remarkable mark in Hollywood, appearing in seven films and several television shows. Her family described her as a deeply kind and trusting soul—qualities that, sadly, sometimes left her vulnerable to exploitation. A gifted writer and artist, Sophie poured her complex emotions and pain into her creative work. Her loved ones shared, “Much of her writing and artwork serve as roadmaps of her struggles and traumas, revealing the profound depths she experienced.”

Despite the efforts of those closest to her—family, therapists, and law enforcement—none could prevent the tragic outcome. Sophie’s family revealed she self-medicated to cope with the heavy burdens of trauma and shame she carried inside, a coping mechanism that ultimately led to her untimely death. “She often insisted she would ‘handle it’ on her own and rejected treatments that might have saved her life,” they said. At this time, the exact cause of death remains unknown.

Sophie’s obituary celebrated her lifelong passion for acting, a dream she fiercely chased from a young age—unaware that her own mother was an actress. “She seemed happiest on set, where she could become someone else. Film sets were her safe haven, and she thrived in the warmth and support of casts and crews who nurtured both her talent and well-being,” her family recalled.

Sophie’s career began with a role in the 2006 film Bella, and she went on to appear in popular TV shows such as Law & Order, And Then Came Love, Margot at the Wedding, and New York City Serenade. Her filmography also includes Shadows & Lies, Mistakes Were Made, Born Again, and What Would You Do.

After her performance alongside Jessica Alba in An Invisible Sign (2010), esteemed film critic Jeannette Catsoulis predicted that Sophie “should have a glowing future.” Though her life was cut far too short, Sophie Nyweide’s talent and spirit continue to resonate deeply with those who knew her and admired her work.
