Why Intimate Odor Happens — and How to Prevent It

The female body often signals when something is wrong, and

unpleasant odor in the intimate area can be one such sign.

While not always serious, it should never be ignored.

Common Causes

  1. Infections: Bacterial vaginosis causes a fishy smell; candidiasis produces sour odor with thick discharge. Untreated, both can harm reproductive health.
  2. Hygiene Imbalance: Too little cleaning allows bacteria to thrive, while over-washing or douching disrupts natural flora.

  3. STIs: Trichomoniasis may cause strong odor with green/yellow discharge.

  4. Hormones & Sweat: Menstruation, pregnancy, menopause, or tight clothing can alter pH and worsen smells.

Prevention Tips

  • Wash with plain water or mild soap, avoid douching.

  • Wear cotton underwear, change regularly.

  • Switch pads/tampons every 3–4 hours.

  • Eat balanced meals, stay hydrated, use protection during sex.

  • Support healthy flora with probiotics like yogurt.
