Supreme Court Greenlights Trump’s Ban on Transgender Military Service

In a deeply divisive move, the U.S. Supreme Court has allowed former President Donald Trump’s ban on transgender individuals serving in the military to take effect, despite ongoing legal battles. The executive order, titled “Prioritizing Military Excellence and Readiness,” asserts that gender identity is incompatible with the demands of military discipline and cohesion.

Originally halted by a federal judge in March over concerns of discrimination and violations of equal protection, the policy was given the green light by the Court on May 6, 2025. The unsigned decision cleared the way for enforcement, with the Court’s liberal justices issuing sharp dissents.

The ruling has ignited fierce backlash from civil rights organizations and legal advocates, who argue the ban is fueled by prejudice rather than any legitimate concern for national defense. Multiple lawsuits, representing both active-duty transgender service members and individuals barred from enlisting, continue to challenge the policy in court.
