Tragic Birthday Celebration Turns Fatal at Lake Lanier: 27-Year-Old Man Drowns Despite Life Jacket
What was meant to be a joyful birthday celebration at Georgia’s Lake Lanier ended in heartbreak on June 14, 2025, when 27-year-old Ramon Diaz-Soria tragically drowned after jumping from a boat. The incident occurred while Diaz-Soria was spending time with friends on the lake. Though he was wearing a life jacket, it was not properly secured. Moments after he entered the water, he slipped beneath the surface—and never came back up.
Family members later confirmed that Diaz-Soria could not swim. His life jacket was discovered floating nearby, and desperate attempts by his friends to rescue him were unsuccessful. The Georgia Department of Natural Resources was alerted that afternoon, and a full-scale search was launched. As night fell, efforts were temporarily halted, but resumed at first light with sonar equipment. His body was recovered the following evening, submerged 60 feet below the surface. The cause of death has been officially confirmed as drowning.
Lake Lanier has long held a reputation for its dangerous waters. With over 200 reported drowning deaths since 1994, the lake’s murky depths, hidden hazards, and heavy recreational traffic continue to pose serious risks to visitors—especially those who are unprepared or unaware of the dangers.

In the wake of Ramon’s death, his family has launched a GoFundMe campaign to help cover funeral expenses and honor his memory. His sister, Abigail Diaz-Soria, called him her best friend and protector, remembering him for his warmth, generosity, and unshakable loyalty.
As this latest tragedy underscores, even a single moment of misjudgment on the water can turn fatal. Authorities are urging the public to ensure life jackets are properly fitted and to take swimming safety seriously, especially in unpredictable environments like Lake Lanier.
