Here Is Matilda Callaghan’s Story, T
A Difficult Start
Rebecca Callaghan’s pregnancy was so risky that doctors had to induce early labor.
Baby Matilda was born with a large blue birthmark and diagnosed with Sturge Weber syndrome, a rare neurological disorder that can cause seizures, paralysis, and cognitive challenges.
Serious Complications
Matilda was rushed to Alder Hey Children’s Hospital.
“We didn’t know if we’d ever see her again,” her parents said.
Doctors also found two holes in her heart.
Miraculously, she survived surgery and began laser treatments that could last up to 16 years.
Facing Judgment
Despite her condition, Matilda is a happy child. Her father Paul said, “Matilda’s birthmark is nothing to judge her on.”
Still, strangers often stare or whisper. “Some people misunderstand Matilda,” he added.
Living with Strength
Nearly blind, Matilda uses a custom walking aid. Now 8 years old, she inspires her family daily.
They’re raising funds for a new wheelchair so she can enjoy life more fully.
